Through a Child's Eyes

Recently, our daughter and three grandchildren came for a visit for spring break. With them, I got to ride the merry-go-round at the zoo, explore the Children’s Museum in DC, and experience godly wisdom from a three-year-old.
One morning, as I was finishing my makeup, our grandson came into our bedroom. After staring at me for a moment, he pointed to his eyes and said, “Oma, glasses. Oma, glasses.” I realized he was letting me know I was missing my glasses. Once I put them on, He looked up at me and said rather excitedly, “I see you.”
…He looked up at me and said rather excitedly, “I see you.”
His comment had nothing to do with his sight, but everything to do with how I appeared. Without my glasses, I didn’t look like myself. With them on, I looked like his Oma once again.
This experience has made me think that there must be times when God wants to prompt me with sayings like, “Katie, patience, or Katie, kindness,” because I don’t look like His daughter at all. There are times when our behavior just doesn’t match our belief.
Yet, when we clothe ourselves, as Paul instructed in his letter to the Colossians, with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, we begin to look more like our true selves - who God has created us to be. And when we put on love, “which binds everything together in perfect harmony,” I can only imagine our Heavenly Father looks at us and says rather happily, “There you are. Now, I see you.”
