Good and Faithful Servants

This weekend we attended two funerals for two separate friends — one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. The loved ones who passed were different in a few ways. One was a man in his early nineties, and the other was a woman in her early fifties. One was born in Connecticut and the other in India. One had three older adult children plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the other had two younger adult children.
Yet, in many ways, these two were more alike than different. They both worked in technology (although one was an electronics technician and the other an engineer), both members of NorthStar churches, and they both loved Jesus. In fact, not only did they love Jesus, they both lived Jesus. I have never met two individuals who were so much alike in their willingness to sacrifice self and serve others so generously and with so much grace. They were two incredibly humble and fun-loving individuals who brought joy and encouragement to other peoples’ lives, even as their health was declining.
What struck me later was the fact that there were no stories told of how these two attended church each week or took part in Bible studies or small groups. Although, they did. But that wasn’t important. At the end of life, what people shared was how these two impacted others and how they made them feel. Their love for Christ made a profound difference in other peoples’ lives.
My life is richer for having known these two beautiful saints. As I reflect on their lives this morning, I can’t help but think, “Until we are together again, may we all be found as faithful.”
