Sara's Prayer
by Katie Harding and Granddaughter
While spending the weekend caring for our grandchildren, our oldest granddaughter (who is in sixth grade) shared one of her short novels with me. It is a fictional story chronicling the life of the boy who gave his lunch to Jesus to feed the five thousand (John 6:1-14). His mother never became a believer in Jesus, but his older sister, Sara, was a faithful evangelist, greatly influencing his life. Near the end of the story, the boy, now a man, shares with his family the prayer Sara wrote shortly before her death. For today’s Monday’s Musings, I am sharing from our granddaughter’s story — Let Them Be Truthful — Sara’s last words and prayer. May we be deeply encouraged by the younger ones of faith the Lord is raising up to continue His work.
Last Words
A year later, Sara, Timothy, and Mary came to visit. We all gathered to celebrate Christ’s birth years ago. Paul, Peter, and Leah, my triplets, were two-years-old and loved to see all the happy faces — babbling as they went. We prayed, blessed the food, and ate. Sara told us about heaven from bed. She had fallen ill a few days after coming. We didn’t know what she had. She was dying. So, Martha (my wife) and I took to raising Timothy and Mary. As Sara grew more ill, she said, “I want my last words to be this: The Lord is a light, a path, and a way. Always steer straight through all the things you will hear and see. Let this be your guide.” An hour later, she was no more. We buried her body and mourned. She was a great being who had an unbreakable faith. She would be missed.
Sara’s Prayer
This is the last prayer Sara wrote:
Dear Lord,
You are not just a myth floating in that vast place beyond earth. You created it and told us to take care of it. You gave us the responsibility, Lord. You are caring. You always will be. Forever. You were there before and shall be after. When we grow old, we shall go to heaven. There will be golden streets, great castles, and eternal happiness. I will go there and so will other believers. You mourn the losses to hell. I shall pray for each one. The earth will never be perfect, but someday You will fix it. We will live there and be happy. You always fulfill your promises and will always. You deserve all the praise. The sun and the moon will bow. The earth will bow to You. For You are our Lord and Savior. —Amen.
We pray this prayer on the day of Sara’s death every year. We pray it on tough days. We pray it often.
