The Goodness of God

by Michele Husfelt

A favorite song of mine, and perhaps yours, too, has lyrics attesting to God’s goodness in our lives:

“And all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God” *

Reading in Genesis the other morning, I was captured anew with the story of Joseph and his brothers. As

there are so many lessons in this one account, my prayer is always that The Spirit would give me fresh eyes to

see new revelation each time I read through it. That morning He did just that.

Israel was near death. He had been reunited with all his sons, and they had all been graciously cared for by

Joseph throughout the time of famine. Feeling his time was coming to an end, he asked Joseph to bring his

grandsons close by so he could extend a blessing upon them. In a deeply moving scene, Israel kissed and

embraced his grandsons. And then, “Israel said to Joseph, ‘I never expected to see your face again, and now

God has allowed me to see your children too’” (Gen. 46:30.) I may have felt a tear drop as The Spirit reminded

me once again of the goodness of God.

As I look forward to a new calendar year, I’m excited for the opportunity to make a fresh start with my

continued journey in reading through the Bible each morning. In addition to other treasures God uncovers on

this adventure, I am on the lookout for Scripture that reminds me of “the goodness of God.” Time and time

again, God implores us to go back and recount His faithfulness. His Word helps us to see His faithfulness in

our daily lives. In the obvious displays and the quiet and gentle ways, I pray my heart would be full of

gratitude and awe at the goodness of God.

“I love You, Lord

For Your mercy never fails me

All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up

Until I lay my head

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God” *
