Hanging Out in the Hallway

By Michele Husfelt on May 16, 2022

Nicky Gumbel, in his One Year Devotional, reminds us that until God opens the door, we should praise Him in the hallway. The thought of waiting in the hallway brings back much anxiety of sitting on a wooden chair with a few other mischievous friends as we awaited our fate outside the principal’s office for tossing a schoolbook out of the bus window. At least I wasn’t alone. It was reassuring to be there with friends.

Years have passed and once again I find myself in the hallway…waiting. However, this waiting is different. Anxiety takes a seat on one side, but the seat on my other side is occupied by excitement and trust. Sitting in the middle, I’m learning to relax and praise Him while I wait.

From school to the pastorate to the many military assignments that have followed, we are once again waiting on our next adventure. Yet this time is different as my husband will retire from Active Duty and for the first time in a long time, Uncle Sam won’t be a part of the equation. We have a friend who told us early in our career that if you don’t trust God is in the assignment system, you need to find another job. With this in mind, our assignments have been easy to accept as we’ve had no input into where “God and Uncle Sam” have determined our next chapter would be written. While we continue to trust God is leading and directing even more so, we feel the weight of this pending move as we now have choices in the matter. So we pray, asking God for clarification and direction. And while waiting in the hallway, we praise Him.

We follow roads to dead-ends and discover doors that are slightly ajar, with a peek into possibilities.

We follow roads to dead-ends and discover doors that are slightly ajar, with a peek into possibilities. Yet, until God answers, we remain in the hallway. We wait, and we continue to praise Him. We find comfort that we’re not alone. Once again, it’s reassuring to be with friends who are also waiting in the hallway for God to lead and direct them.

What are you waiting for today? Join us as we praise God in the hallway, waiting for Him to open just the right door.
